The next Post Summit Workgroup meeting has been scheduled for:
Wednesday- May 4- 1:30pm at NAMI Greater Milwaukee- 3732 W. Wisconsin Ave (park and enter through the rear lot)

The post-summit workgroup met on 3/22 (see below for a link to the March minutes).  The group is making strides and has decided on its next steps. 

The group will be focusing on increasing diverse representation and input with 3 current community efforts and the work that is already underway.  The group knows there has been attempts and effort made to include diversity in these initiatives; but we do not think it is sufficient and as a workgroup would like to work on improving the representation, which in turn will improve the input being contributed to these important initiatives. The 3-initiatives include:

  • Co-occurring- CCISC initiative;
  • Adult mental health redesign initiative  
  • Community Advisory Board for BHD (if approved for another year)

Aside from ways to improve diversity with these initiatives, the workgroup would like to help ensure the national recommendations (see below)  for decreasing mental health disparities is part of the ongoing planning process.  The group thought these initiatives, which are already in place is a more efficient way to reach community programs on a larger scale and have a bigger impact on systemic change. 

National recommendations for decreasing health/mental health disparities:

  • Improving access and reducing barriers to already existing programs
  • Improving quality of clinical treatment through culturally proficiency training
  • Increasing education support and capacity building to increase workforce diversity

We still need the support of the Mental Health Task Force and other interested community members to ensure the success of this workgroup.  We hope you can join us for our next meeting on May 4.

Please save the date and note that the meeting will begin earlier than usual at 2:00 and will be at a different location.  A huge thank you to Rachel Morgan of the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin for her leadership in planning this training and to Dr. Sheri Johnson for graciously giving her time and expertise to facilitate the session.  Following the training, we will hold our April task force meeting.

4:00 – 5:00 PM - Task Force meeting 
Program We will view and discuss the DVD entitled “Race: The Power of An Illusion”.  The discussion will be facilitated by Sheri Johnson, PhD Assistant Professor, Medical College of Wisconsin.  This program is an important training for task force members to support us as we begin to plan our 2010 summit on Mental Health: Race, Culture, and Ethnicity”Following the meeting, the Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force will meet. 
Who Should Attend All task force members are strongly encouraged to attend and you are also encouraged to bring others from your agency, including your agency leadership, who may benefit from this training.
Meeting Location We will meet at the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin at 3020 W. Vliet. Use the first side door on Vliet St. for entry as well or ring the door bells near each parking lot for entrance .
Parking Parking is available on the street or either parking lot located on the East and West side of the building
